Counterintuitively, overdoing your backswing can actually hurt your swing distance. Pulling the club back does put power into the hit, but overdoing it can ruin your posture, you may even miss the ball entirely and possibly even injure yourself.

Every person has a different weight, height and body structure, so a golf club that works exceptionally well for one player, may be difficult for another player to use. If your club is well-suited to your body and style, your swing will improve.


Try a toe-wiggling experiment to reveal any faults in your stance. If the golfer finds this act difficult as he prepares to swing, he is leaning unreasonably forward and into the ball. The best stance is one where there is some give in the feet, but not too much.


Long putts require fast swings. Hit the ball as quickly as possible to propel it forward the greatest distance. Don't aim for the hole, instead aim for a point between yourself and your goal which lies on the way to the hole. Doing so boosts your chances of getting a second shorter putt by making sure your first one isn't overly long or short.


Miss-hit golf balls that have been lost abound on any golf course. Just keep a few of those costly, name brand golf balls. You may want to use them when playing in a tournament, or to impress important people.


Don't angle the face of your club when driving. This helps the ball travel in a straight line. Unless the club is aligned with the ball, it is unlikely that your shot will be as controlled as you would like it to be. Ideally, you should hit the golf ball at a perfect right angle. Manipulate the club a few times until you discover the best position to achieve this.


To help you hit better golf shots, pay close attention to how you are addressing the ball. This position can help you determine how far the ball will go. The golf ball will not travel very far if you slouch too much or too little.


When you are lodged in the sand trap, be sure to mind your manners. Once finished with your shot, take a few seconds to carefully rake the trap. Leaving divots and dents in the sand can create an even bigger hazard for the next player that puts a ball in the trap. Once you've hit your ball out, rake the trap out for the next golfer.


Make sure to line up your feet properly. This is perhaps the simplest and most effective way to improve your swing. You want your feet to be lined up perpendicular to the place you wish the ball to go. You can check this easily by placing the club up to your toes so that it points where the ball can travel.


Even if you're a great golfer, your ball can still wind up in sand traps or bunkers. It can hurt the surface of the sand when you take your shot. Raking the bunker after you free your ball is important to keep the course looking nice for the next players. When you leave the bunker well raked after you are through, you give the golfers who follow you the ability to hit their ball from the sand more easily.
